2. The wick: pure, untreated cotton

A pure cotton wick, with no lead or metal wire, burns without flickering and does not smoke. Wicks that are too thin go out in the wax; wicks that are too thick blacken the glass. That is why the wick diameter must be matched to the diameter of the jar — a fit that only artisanal production truly allows.

3. The origin of the fragrance: the Grasse reference

Scenting a wardrobe or linen: the forgotten gesture

A home fragrance is not only for the living space. Scenting a wardrobe, a dressing room or a linen cupboard extends the trail well beyond the flame: place an unlit candle, lid removed and without taking off the protective film, between two piles of linen. The cold wax continues to diffuse in the cold for several weeks. For a faster result, light the candle for 30 minutes in the room before placing it in the closed wardrobe: the linen captures the woody or powdery base, and keeps it for days.

• Price per weight — candles from high-end Nordic houses are frequently between €8 and €15 per 100 g; a French hand-poured candle, around €5 to €9 per 100 g at equivalent wax quality.
• Scent trail — signed French compositions favour a dressed, refined ambience; Scandinavian compositions are often more discreet, almost muted.
• Refill & glass — a thick glass container, reusable or refillable, changes the cost in use and the amount of waste.
• Traceability — "Made in France" must mean a known place of production and an identified workshop, not just a trademark registered in France.

How long should you burn a scented candle? The instructions for use

1. First burn: all the way to a full melt pool. Let it burn until the entire wax surface is melted (1 to 2 hours depending on the diameter). This is what prevents tunnelling and makes the candle last twice as long.
2. Trim the wick to 5 mm before every use. A long wick smokes, blackens the glass and burns off the fragrance.
3. Never more than 2 to 4 hours at a time. Beyond that, the glass overheats and the scent grows thin.
4. Extinguish without blowing — a snuffer limits the plume of smoke and the spatter of wax. Never pour water into the wax.
5. Air the room 10 minutes before guests arrive: the trail remains present without overwhelming the senses.

Which scented candle should I choose for a large living room?

For a room larger than 25 m², aim for 200 to 400 g of wax per candle, with a fragrance concentration of at least 8%. Two medium candles placed at either end of the room often diffuse better than one very large candle forgotten in the centre.

Vegetable wax candle or paraffin candle?

Vegetable wax (soy, rapeseed, coconut) is preferable indoors: cleaner burn, no soot, better rendering of delicate notes and a longer burn time for the same weight. Paraffin remains cheaper and gives off a petroleum smell that masks the top notes.

How long does it take for a home fragrance to fill a room?

Allow 20 to 30 minutes for a fragrance to diffuse through an average room, and about 2 hours for it to soak into textiles and curtains. It is the saturation of textiles that keeps the scent lingering after the candle is extinguished.

Why does my scented candle blacken the glass or smoke?

Three causes, in this order: a wick that is too long (trim to 5 mm), excessive burning beyond 4 hours, or a direct draught. A good-diameter cotton wick and regular trimming solve almost every case.

Is a luxury scented candle safe for the home?

A quality candle contains no phthalates and no substances classified as CMR in its fragrance formula, and uses a lead-free wick. It remains an open-flame object nonetheless: keep it away from children, pets and textiles, on a stable, non-flammable surface.
